Let's talk about spring - what a glorious time to be a gardener - it's a little too cold and wet to do much but it's a great time to reap the rewards of previous efforts. I have been loving my hellebores for several months already - they began blooming before the snowfall in February and are still blooming now. I have thousands of daffodils and even though many were beaten down with the icy rain all of them have bloomed and are lovely. Tulips are probably ranked close to the top of my very long list of favorite flowers. I love the colors they come in and I love how they follow the sun when I bring them in the house for a bouquet. I also love them in mixes in the gardens. I frequently buy bouquets of tulips at the local florists in the winter for the same reason I buy groceries at the grocery store ... I think of them as a necessity and I prefer to buy them from the flower specialists, not the meat specialist. As I walk the gardens I shouldn't forget to mention the little guys - Chionodoxa and Squill are two of my very favorite long lasting little blue guys. The Guinea Hen Frittelaria are too cool to not love and the skunky smelling orange Frittelaria are tall and elegant. Hyacinths are blooming already in every color. It seems like flowers are early this year - maybe because we all need a boost as we wait for summer.
